Sport Premium 2020-21

Sport and Physical Education have an essential role to play in children’s recovery, particularly following a period of lockdown which has seen too many either become less active or completely inactive."

 The Government provides funding to improve the quality of PE and Sport in schools and academies that have children of primary school age. Schools ceased to operate conventionally on Friday 20th March 2020, due to COVID-19. Any Government PE and Sport Premium funding from the previous academic year (2019-20) which schools did not use as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak, will be carried forward to use in this academic year, providing an opportunity to develop or add to existing provision, or to make improvements that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

From September 2020 we will continue with our planned provision working with Premier sport as well as other specialist providers. Our PE Curriculum Leader has generated an action plan for 2020/21 that incorporates both ‘catch-up’ initiatives and other health and wellbeing strategies from this year’s plan, linking to each school’s action plan priorities. This takes into account the DfE’s guidance relating to spending time supporting children returning to school after COVID-19 as well as the usual sporting and fitness priorities.

We use our funding this year to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity and sport.

This means that we will use the premium to:

  • Add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities by introducing more variety of sports
  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

We will also ensure:

  • the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity 
  • the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  • increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

This year we are concentrating on the following:

  • introducing new sports and other activities to encourage more pupils to take up sport and physical activities (such as Dance, fencing, Archery, Yoga etc)
  • supporting and involving the least active children by providing targeted activities 
  • encouraging pupils to take on leadership or volunteer roles that support sport and physical activity within the school
  • raise attainment in primary school swimming to meet requirements of the national curriculum before the end of key stage 2
  • embed physical activity into the school day (Forest Schools / essential life skills)
